Lasik & Eyes Optical Questions and Answers

Have you had a bad experience with LASIK surgery?
I am quite near-sighted and have worn glasses (now contacts) since childhood. I had planned to get LASIK as soon as my Rx became stable. Recently I came across some Web sites made by LASIK "victims" who claim to have had some terrible, permanent side effects (dry eye, double vision). Anyone here had a similar experience, or know someone who has?Answers: Not as a patient (I'm not a good candidate even if I considered the risks acceptable)
But as a practitioner I've had to do my best for a good number of people whose best possible vision had been made worse by refractive surgery:
visible scarring, irregular astigmatism, dry eyes and tear problems, glare affecting night driving... I've seen them all personally.
Bear in mind that this is a very small percentage: in one study of people who had had it done, 96% were sufficiently positive about the outcome, even if they noticed some degree of side effect, that they would recommend it to a friend.
Links added... I couldn't find the original page where the 96 (or 97)% despite problems caught my eye, but I've been able to turn up similar...
" 29% reported reduced night vision - however, it's important to note that 97% of patients indicated they would [have]decided to have LASIK again."
No I haven't.
But when I decided to get rid of my glasses 6 years ago there was a history of 1 in 10,000 people that had difficulty with Lasik and I was told by many Doctors that RK would reverse itself as I am a scuba diver. RK changes vision with wounds swelling the eyes. Lasik removes parts of the eye. I had Corneal Implants done and they are inserted and can be removed. The implants I have are called In-tacts
The main "normal" side effects are dry eyes and after time some of astigmatism (usually minor if you do not stress yourself, as I believe, besides hereditary reasons and trauma, most eye disorders come from stress.
Things can go bad in any operation and this is Lasik but a surgery nonetheless. Choose the best Doctor you can get.
I had LASIK performed and I am very happy with it. I had work contacts for almost thirty years and it drove me nuts. I still wake up in the morning and have a tendency to put my contacts in, even though I don't need them.
I have dry eye in the morning, but I plop a drop in my eyes and I'm good for the day.
For me, there is no comparison. I will gladly take a little dry eye in the morning, compared to having to wear contacts.
A tip: Don't skimp when finding a doctor. Pay the extra, it will pay for itself.
I don't personally know anybody, but employers are cracking down on some professions. Pilots and surgeons can find themselves out of a job if they get Lasik treatment. Some lab techs have been taken out of that area at my Mom's hospital because they were no longer able to perform their jobs due to repeated blurring. It is definitely not without pitfalls.
Why do my eyes hurt after reading?
i have picked up reading again and my eyes hurt really bad after reading only 10 or 15 pages? whats up?Answers: "...i can see everything very clearly so why would i need glasses "
That's the key point.
Because glasses can often help with other things than sharpness, including fatigue symptoms.
Your symptoms raise two obvious optical possibilities.
Long-sight, hyperopia...
Being optically underpowered, hyperopic eyes require the use of reading focus reserves to achieve clear vision.
This often happens habitually with no conscious awareness or visual difficulty.
But on turning to reading with some proportion of the muscle refocussing, "accommodation", already assigned, "used up", the eyes perform at near like ones much older than they are. if this causes no problem, it is no problem.
But if it causes tiredness or fatigue, the answer is +ve RX glasses to take the distance load, freeing up the natural reading ability for its proper job, closework.
The glasses might be useful all the time, or just for closework.
Alternately, there could be a problem with the coordination of the eyes. If they are having trouble maintaining alignment at near without fatigue (convergence deficiency, convergence excess), eye exercises or glasses with prisms may be of considerable benefit, without touching the *focus* of the eyes at all.
Any which way, a proper check to see what's going on is, I suggest, indicated.
Even if the doctor/optometrist suggests glasses, you're not committed. You can always not take the advice!
it means you need glasses, and you are straining your eyes.
also, the light could be too dim
a) dim light
b) need glasses
c) check with a doctor (eye doctor is better =) )
Was the lighting okay? Were you staring into the book and not blinking? When I read at night my eyes start getting this burning feeling. So take a break between pages and have a glass of water next to you. It helps, and good for you that you read! ;)
And I hope your eyes aren't severely hurt...
it is possible the book is too close to ur eyes which means ur farsighted cause when i was little that used to happen to me and it still happens to me sometimes when i read so just try extending ur arms all the way so the book is far away from u as possible but so u could still read it. it might also be because the lighting in the room u read in for instance i read be fore i go to sleep and i would read laying on my back and the light would be right there shining in my eyes and they would start to hurt so to fix it i got a small lamp so when eveer i read i turn the mail light off and the lamp on and my eyes dont hurt anymore
there u go!
well, my eyes get really tired and even sore after reading, usually i read for about three or so hours a day, very often more than that, sometimes all at once, plus i have the bad habit of reading in poor light, so my sore eyes (and probable future need of reading glasses) is because of reading too much. if you didn't read before this then it's probably because you're just not used to reading for any length of time, you can try having your eyes checked but it might just go away as you get used to reading more.
btw people feel free to e-mail me, i like to talk about books and reading!
Jes looks like he's been reading too much.he's squinting...
Are you reading at night? It could be your tired.
Dim light can strain your eyes...its good to have medium lighting when reading...not bright...just medium.
I suggest getting your eyes checked by a professional optometrist to get the answers and then see if you need glasses or contacts.I dont suggest getting the answer here as you cannot be properly tested and might not get the right answer.
well glasses help getting pressure off your eyes
because obviously that your eyes are getting tired and need rest
with galsses they can rely on something and makes the "ride" much easier =)
or
you can just rest between readings
and do some eye-exercises like rubbing around the eyes to massage them
it helps usually
Strange substance in my eye?
I sometimes have a sticky, wet substance accumulate in the bottom of my eyes after wearing my contacts all day.At first it makes my vision blurry, but if I use a Q-tip I can clean it out.I also find this happens when I wear my contacts overnight accidentally. It usually drys and gets all crusty..Is it an infection or just "sleep" (the stuff that as a kid you are told is what crusts up on your eyes at night)
Answers: it is the protein that is getting accumulated in your lens. I think the reason is that your lens cleaning solution is not proving upto the mark in removing this protein. you should first and foremost cleanse your contacts with protein removing tablet and then change your lenses cleaning solution (buy one which is more beneficial in removing protein). this situation usually happens with people having high lens power or daily usage where protein comes out more from the eyes. Don't worry try what i told you and it will help.
Ideally it is suggested that any such issue should be consulted with the doc.
